About us

In a perfect world, research would be judged on its own merits and not on the quality of the researcher's English language education. In reality, we have found that both journal editors and journal readers will pay less attention to a research article written in imperfect English. At American Journal Experts (AJE), we hope to fix this problem by providing international researchers with native English speaking editors. AJE will edit your research articles for spelling, grammar, and—most importantly—English language style. With AJE, your research will be easily readable so you get the respect your work deserves. American Journal Experts is a network of American graduate students in Ph.D. and M.D. programs dedicated to helping international researchers publish their findings in the best English language journals possible. Graduate students are the perfect native English-speaking editors because of their knowledge of the science and the specific written conventions of each research field. You get a highly trained subject-specific and native English-speaking editor every time!

The value of our service

AJE was established to help international researchers publish in English language journals when it became clear that grammatical mistakes and improper use of English created a negative bias in readers' minds. Although we wanted to believe that a reader's opinion of a published paper was based solely on the quality of the research, we realized that readers equated mistakes in writing with carelessness in research design and execution. Research articles that are seen as careless are less frequently cited, less frequently read, and less frequently believed.

Coates, Sturgeon, Bohannan, Pasini: Language and publication in 'Cardiovascular Research' articles. Cardiovascular Research 2002.

Even more important than the biases of the journal readers are the views of the journal editors. Unfortunately, peer reviewers and journal editors have trouble differentiating between English language mistakes that interrupt the flow of your work and lower quality research. There have been numerous studies suggesting that poorly written papers and submissions from international authors are at a distinct disadvantage in the screening and review process of academic journals (Coates et al. 2002, Radford et al. 1999, Eisenberg et al. 2002, Bordage 2001). A study by Coates et al. on 120 papers submitted to Cardiovascular Research found clear evidence that writing quality, specifically the number of mistakes in a submitted paper, had an influence on whether the paper was accepted for publication.
