Editing services

At American Journal Experts, we understand the importance of publishing your research in the absolute best journal possible. In an environment where your reputation depends on the written word, it is essential to present the best possible manuscript to the scientific community. AJE allows you to concentrate on your research, not your English skills, by bringing you in contact with our subject-expert editors. An editor from your field will read and edit your manuscript so that it will be ready for the top English language journals.

AJE editing services include:

  • correcting spelling, grammatical and punctuation errors
  • checking for problems in parallelisms, tense and conjugations
  • eliminating improper language and poor word choice
  • making your document sound natural and professional
  • understanding the science behind your document
  • conforming to British or American English

AJE editing services do NOT include:

  • changing the formatting of the document, word count changes or adhering to a specific style sheet
  • editing for research content - that is the job of the journal's peer reviewers
  • translation from a foreign language - our editors are native speakers and are not translators
  • verifying, editing or formatting references
  • writing, rewriting or paraphrasing any part of the document

AJE offers two levels of editing

To accommodate the needs of various clients, AJE offers two levels of editing. Most researchers will be satisfied with our Standard Document Proofing, which for years was our only level of editing. Thousands of customers have come to rely on our Standard document proofing for comprehensive English-language editing. We also offer a Premium document editing service to cater to a small number of customers who desire a more in-depth edit. Read the descriptions below to decide which service is the best fit for you.

Standard document proofing

Our standard document proofing is done by one subject-expert editor and approved by a managing editor. The two editors working on your document will focus on correcting spelling, grammar, usage and punctuation errors. They will change improper language and suggest alternate phrasing when poor wording is used. The editors will alter sentences that sound awkward or unnatural and may point out portions of your document that are vague, confusing or simply need to be rewritten.

Premium document editing

Our premium document editing (PDE) is performed by two subject expert editors and approved by a managing editor. In this process, the first subject editor provides the same type of editing as our Standard document proofing. The second editor will then re-edit the document, checking for omissions and offering more nuanced suggestions for language improvement. Our second round of editing places additional emphasis on the overall flow and sound of the document. With PDE, you can expect more suggestions regarding the finer points of language and style. Furthermore, the use of an additional editor inherently produces a more thorough editing of the document.

Our PDE service also incorporates an editing summary: a short document that assesses the editing performed on your manuscript and addresses any concerns or comments the editors may have.

We guarantee our work

We stand behind the quality of our work and are confident that our editing will improve your chances of publication. If your manuscript is rejected from publication for reasons of English alone, and we believe that you have made a good faith effort to incorporate our changes, we will re-edit your manuscript for free.

If you have any complaints about the quality of our work, please see how to file a complaint.

Unfortunately we cannot promise to re-edit manuscripts that undergo rewriting after our editors have performed their revisions. For that reason, we suggest that you submit your manuscript to us in its final form, just before you send it to the journal. If you have made significant revisions to your manuscript and wish to have AJE proofread these again, it will be considered a re-edit and will receive a 20% discount off of another round of editing. Learn more about re-edits.

We provide an editing certificate

AJE will provide a certificate confirming that your paper was edited by a native English speaker at AJE and, assuming all of the changes we proposed are incorporated into the manuscript, is ready for journal submission. This will allow journal editors to feel confident that the English language in your paper has been reviewed and verified. Not every paper will earn a certificate, but every paper will have the opportunity. Learn more about the certificate program.

Our editing tools

We accept manuscripts in two forms: Microsoft Word documents (preferred) and text documents. Once we receive your submission, we use a tool built into Microsoft Word called 'Track Changes' to edit your document. This feature is present in all Microsoft Word editions under the 'Tools' bar. After we edit your submission, you will get a finished document back that shows you the changes we suggest. If you open your finished document in Microsoft Word, you will have the option of accepting or rejecting any changes that we have suggested. Therefore, if for some reason you disagree with one of our suggestions, you have the option to accept all of the edits but the one you dislike. For more suggestions to help you make the best use of our service, please visit our submission suggestions for authors.

A sample of our editing

The best way to explain the service AJE provides is to show you an example. Here is a sample paragraph from a manuscript that AJE would receive:
